Let's Raise the Bar

Matt Tully’s column in today’s Indy Star focused on the race for Marion County Prosecutor. Matt notes that both candidates are good but each has their own downsides. He states that Melina Kennedy’s is her lack of experience.

Maybe it is just us but is not being qualified for the office you are running for merely a “downside?” As far as the FIN is concerned, being qualified is the most basic requirement for any candidate, Republican or Democrat. The other personal preferences in ideology and policy initiatives come into play when both candidates are qualified to hold the office for which they are campaigning.

Being inexperienced and lacking a basic understanding of the office is not simply a downside. It’s the whole ball game.

but being corrupt and caring more about being mayor then about prosecuting criminals is okay by the FIN

How can someone with no experience guide an office in upholding and enforcing the law.

I would no more want a foot doctor to treat me for a heart problem then I would want a business lawyer with no criminal trial experience running the Prosecutor's office

i guess the colts didn't call me when they wanted to get rid of vanderjagt because i had that unfortunate "downside" of never having kicked a football thru the uprights.

wow, throwing around all sorts of little accusations this evening, aren't we? whenver you guys get the chance to talk about things that matter like experience, the first thing you do is jump to mudslinging.

Melina Kennedy has both been a litigator, and has a great deal of criminal (including capital crimes) legal experience...as for the foot doctor comment, if my heart was hurting as bad as crime has been rising under Mr. Brizzi, i'd let any doctor as qualified and intelligent as Melina Kennedy is help out

Republicans are....scared, scared, scared, scared, scared, scared, scared, scared.

Melina Kennedy has had absolutly no litigation experience and has never tried a criminal case. It just goes to show, even Melina supporters have no idea what a prosecutor does. Go back to the mayor's office and mess things up there.

Anonymous, I'm curious, working for two years carrying a brief case for people at a now defunct law firm makes you a litigator? And as to the "great deal of criminal (including capital crimes)" , let's be clear. What did Melina do? Which capital cases did she work on? Is Justice Sullivan giving her credit for writing some opinions that we don't know about? And finally, you need to call your buddies Bart and Frank about the crime issue. They run the police who are suppose to prevent crime, remember????

Brizzi certainly has shown us what sexual harrassment in the work place looks like. Low morale in the office leads to sloppy prosecutions.

Lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies.

You better have your facts straight before you throw around accusations like that. Or you might just get lots of egg on your face.

Melina Kennedy has litigation experience and criminal experience. Unless you think practicing law and working for the Highest Court in Indiana are not good "experiences," it just goes along with the Marion County GOP being scared of losing the MCPO. I'd be scared to, a marginal prosecutor with an abyssmal record on crime facing a talented, intelligent and soon-to-be victorious Melina Kennedy. (Besides, at least she wants to be Prosecutor, Carl is too busy trying to be Mayor (another race he'd get stomped in)

the poster who remarked that Republicans are "scared, scared, scared" was spot-on. if they weren't scared, they would be running on how good Carl Brizzi is (or isn't) and his record of decreasing crime (or increasing) and his tough stands on ethical conduct in state government (or his partisan-motivations) or his pledge to serve his full four-year term as prosecutor (or his unveiled desire to be Mayor). Republicans are scared, as an incumbent, going negative, Carl Brizzi is VERY scared...maybe he should be...

At 1:08 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Carl has to be "scared, scared, scared" and not of the three years of rising crime due to his weak pleas, inefficient office and political aspirations clouding legitimate crime fighting. Brizzi's in trouble, Kennedy's experience won't play for six months, when will he have to defend his (terrible) record?

Are Marion County Republicans really this scared this early? Going negative as an incumbent helps Melina Kennedy. Her experience is plenty when laid out, but the voters care more about the fact that under Carl Brizzi's watch, crime has gone up (three years in a row) due to weak pleas, delays in going to tria, allowing felons to go uncharged...

The title of the post is "Let's Raise the Bar" and then the "FIN" goes into attacking the opponent. Let's actually raise the bar, and run on Brizzi's record of fighting crime...

If Brizzi weren't so interested in trying to unseat "King Bart" perhaps he could focus on crime. You want to fix Indy Now? Beat Brizzi.

As a republican, it bothers me that Carl Brizzi can't run on his record. Go Fight Crime Carl, don't be doing this sh*t about Ms. Kennedy's experience now, crime's up, instead of trying to convince people it is the (popular) Mayor or (even more popular) Sherriff's fault, go Fix Indy Now!

I'm curious, which facts???? I don't see any facts in your suggestions. That's the whole point.

At 2:55 PM, Anonymous jake said...

Again, the prosecutor can only go after people after they've been caught. Rising crime rates fall under the Sheriff's watch. And I am so sick of hearing you guys complain about Republicans mudslinging because we question if Kennedy is even qualified. The only reason you guys call it mudslining is because you don't have an answer that is acceptable. She hasn't prosecuted a case and even worse, she has no trial experience. How on earth do you think she can hold this office??

Didn't Steve Goldsmith leave a corporate law practice (with no criminal experience) at Barnes & Thornburg to run for prosecutor? Did the Marion County GOP object to his lack of experience? Oh, wait, that's right, he was hand-picked by the Marion County GOP for the job . . .

At 5:57 PM, Blogger Advance Indiana said...

Goldsmith actually had experience working as an assistant U.S. attorney before running for prosecutor as did Scott Newman.

looks like FIN needs to get some more supporters on here...some decent writing would be nice, too...

icareaboutcrime says that Carl Brizzi won't plege to server his full term. Kennedy tried a cheap political stunt asking him to sign a letter saying he would serve his full term. When the mayor was asked the same thing he refused stating it was just a political stunt.

Brizzi has made no statment about running for mayor that I have read.
He has worked to make sure offenders are put in jail, but with no space to hold them until trial they are let out. The mayor's office can find money to give the Colts but won't pony up to fix the jail problem.

Ok, so lets raise the bar. You mention being corrupt, lets hear some facts! Just what has Brizzi done that is corrupt?

Facts about Brizzi
Fact 1
Pushed for a law that allowed for stiffer sentences for pedophiles
Fact 2
Has a program to work with at risk kids in order to help them stay out of trouble.
Fact 3
Has created a Community Prosecutor unit that is recognized as one of the best in the country. And has devleoped a program to teach school kids of the dangers of guns.

As for Kennedy

Fact 1
She has olny practiced business law
Fact 2
She clearly overlooked the rules in regards to the parade and used it for campaigning
So if she disregards the rules that everyone else follows, what dose that same for her character?
Fact 3
She has come up with no real ideas, she just hold press conferences saying how she would do this or that differently after the Prosecutor comments about current laws are cases.

One must only look at the article in Star detailing the escapess of whom over 3/4 are caught by the Sheriff and his Deputies to not be Prosecuted by Brizzi...the GOP really is scared...

At 8:08 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think it is great that so many people resond. Republicans would be busy responding, but we are all busy working, paying taxes to spend the ridiculous amount of money the democratic council and mayor are spending on things like the library chief's raise.

At 7:45 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

All you can come up with is one artical from the Star about escapess from the jail?

Last I check the Prosecutor isn't in charge of the jail.

Please, if you can't state any items to show that Kennedy has the experience to be Prosecutor don't bother posting.

Now its learned that she let her Indiana bar standing expire. Boy, I sure want her in charge of such an important office.
